Interview with Lauren Sigman of Lauren Sigman Jewelry, Designed with Happiness

What is your “why” and what made you start Lauren Sigman Jewelry?

I had been working in the “corporate” world for 20yrs and really wanted to tap into my creative side. I had always loved jewelry and starting taking some metal smith classes for fun. I met a master jewelry who agreed to take me on as an understudy. After a while I thought, I can do this. I had a masters degree in business and knew just enough to take a leap into putting together my own private labeled collection. Ten years later, I laugh thinking back to those days and how much I didn’t know! I guess there’s no better training then on the job training!

Where do you find inspiration?

Much of my esthetic is based in nature, specifically flowers. I knew when creating my first collection that I had to have something that people could identify as me. A signature style or technique. I chose flowers. Probably because I was born and raised in sunny Florida with lots of flowers, but mostly because they make me happy. My inspiration comes from all over. From my travels to sitting in my studio and allowing myself time to be creative.

How has branding photography and content creation been helpful in your business?

I learned early on that photography was key to selling jewelry. If I couldn’t show it in photos as pretty as it was in person, I know my business was going to be limited. I didn’t want to depend on going to selling shows with a limited audience when I have an opportunity with photography to have any and everyone see my work. On the other hand, this same opportunity allows for thousands of designers just like me to show their work. We all must compete for peoples limited time, money and attention. The content creation allows me to build and stamp my brand so it’s recognizable as Lauren Sigman Jewelry before you’re even told. If my business isn’t continuing to create a recognizable brand, I’m sure to get lost in all the content available to buyers and prospects.

What was the best piece of advice someone gave you?

Long before I became a jewelry designer I was in sales. My first month of work as a young professional I walked into a potential clients office. When I was leaving, the now client handed me a piece of paper that said, “Illegitimi non carborundum”. It’s a latin phrase translated to “Don’t let the bastards get you down”. I carried that little piece of paper around with me for 20yrs!

What are some of your favorite resources?

(Podcasts, books, articles)-I'm hooked on audible. I love a good business, marketing or phycology book. Listening instead of reading allows me to use my travel time in the car or on the go to learn something. Plus, I love multitasking! Audible is the perfect multitasking tool.

What’s something you have coming up that you are looking forward to?

Next month, my husband and I are traveling to Aspen, Colorado to celebrate a friends 50 birthday. He and I met in college and ended up going to grad school together.  He moved out to California after graduate school but we’ve remained great friends for 30yrs. I can’t believe how far we’ve come and it will be so much fun to celebrate with him. Not to mention, my husband and I love Colorado in the summer!

When you’re not busy running your business what is something you like to do for fun?

I love traveling and seeing new places. I love hiking and almost anything outdoors if it’s not 90 degrees. Also, anytime I can spend time with my kids who are mostly grown I get so excited! I find them so interesting as they grow into adults~I’m also a very curious person so I love to learn new things and talk to lots of people and ask way to many questions! My friends always tell me I should have been a therapist.
